embargo - hyannis ma

going to this restaurant was actually a bit of an accident. originally, the fiancé and i were about to head to a place called the naked oyster…which is actually down the street from the naked oyster and the seaside pub (our first cape cod restaurant).

while walking around hyannis, we passed embargo and noticed their happy hour sign - showing that they had $1 oysters and half price tapas starting at 4pm.

well. considering the special pricing, we figured the place looked nice enough…yelp had some alright reviews…we figured this sounded like a better deal. which is something i should have just stuck to my guns on, and kept walking towards the naked oyster.

oysters - sucked. the bellies were popped, there were shards of shell and sand in them…they tasted fine but anyone who knows oysters could tell you that this is just NOT how to serve them. i even kind of cut the corner of my mouth on them. i’m not the type to send food back, so i dealt with it. and overall, as long as they didn’t get sick (which i didn’t) i was gonna be happy to eat them. there’s worse things in the world than a poorly shucked oyster.

dates stuffed with brie and wrapped with serrano ham - awesome flavor. it’s actually something i plan on making for myself every once in a while. the salty pork and sweet, creamy mix of brie and date was such an interesting snack. a little pricey at 7 bucks for 3 dates, but half off made it worth the money.

seared scallops with bacon and farofa - very nice flavor…scallops and bacon? match made in heaven. however, overcooked scallops made for a less than pleasing rubbery texture. the farofa was pretty interesting…although it just tasted like mashed potatoes.

kobe sliders - probably the best dish of the night. the flavor of kobe beef really can’t be beat. it was pretty basic…and there was an up charge for cheese which was pretty lame, but overall very tasty.

fish tostadas - quite nice, although the goat cheese brought a bit of a funkiness that you wouldn’t normally expect to be pleasant with fish. i liked it, but i can totally see most people mistaking this pungency for a not-so-fresh piece of fish. also, the fish was fried…i probably would have preferred it to be grilled.

lobster mac n cheese - probably made with frozen lobster. at first, i was convinced it was crab that they tried to pass off as lobster…but at the end of the day, i didn’t really matter to me. i was very off-put by the flavor of whatever crustacean was in that dish. the mac n cheese tasted fine…but i didn’t enjoy the fish so much. considering all items with lobster were NOT discounted during happy hour, i was damn sure to eat it anyway.

overall…not so impressed. however, i can’t say it was the worst dining experience i’ve ever had. maybe i was overly critical after being disappointed with my oysters, but hey…i was really looking forward to them.

also, the waiter was a bit of a spazz. he told me the chef wasn’t feeling so great today, and that he apologizes for the wait on the lobster mac…which is always good to hear after sucking down subpar raw oysters.

i like to be optimistic, so maybe this was just an off day. but either way, i ate…i was full…i didn’t puke. good day in my book.

post-engagement.

now that i’m back in new york…and engaged…and saving up for a wedding…the girlfriend and i have agreed not to go out to dinner as much.

good news for my wallet, not so great news for my blog.

however, i do have quite a few blog entries to write about my experience in massachusetts. we had so much fun, and ate such good food…and i definitely want to write about it.

a few restaurants/cafés to write about:

emBARgo

flour bakery + café

clio

today is my first day back to class after a week of rest and relaxation that i didn’t want to end, so i’m feeling super sluggish. i’m hoping to get started with the reviews tonight or tomorrow.

retro burger - west yarmouth, ma

very cool 50’s themed interior. amazing cheese fries, really great burgers…and the owner is SUPER nice.

vacation update

i’ve been so busy sightseeing and having fun that it hasn’t really been a priority to write much or edit video much. i did walk around a cranberry bog though…no fruit yet, but it was still pretty cool.

in other more food related news, i do have two restaurants to write about. so, keep your eyes peeled for that. also, we visited the cape cod potato chip factory today. the tour was self-guided and very short..but it was still pretty fun. i bought a shirt that looked like it would fit in the gift shop. i got home and it was WAY too small. but the next size up seemed huge…idk, super lame.

i would say the factory tour is definitely something cool to do with kids, but a little underwhelming for adult foodies such as the girlfriend and myself. i’m hoping the sam adams tour on thursday is a little bit more my speed.

tomorrow is boston! super excited for everything. still gotta pack…yikes. more info tomorrow!

it’s beautiful here!

today is the first real day of my cape cod/boston adventure. we didn’t get here until almost 9 last night, and a sunday night during the off-season means EVERYTHING is closed. but the resort is gorgeous and, now that it’s daytime, the surrounding area is really cute as well. right now we’re taking a break for lunch, but we’ve already done a little bit of exploring and plan to head out again in a few minutes. i’ve got lots of footage already and plan to get even more…which i will edit and post later tonight.

so far no restaurants to speak of. although, we may go somewhere tonight but we’re not too sure where. the restaurant in the resort is only open thursday to sunday on the off-season…so we may not get to try it out.

gourmology:

Luke’s Lobster Roll. Whole chunks of lobster imported from Maine. I have had some pretty awful overpriced lobster roll experiences in the past a.k.a. Tiny amounts of minced lobster drenched in mayo. That will not happen at Luke’s.

while this may not be boston/cape cod related, i do feel this is a fitting kick off to the next week. enjoy this little bit of new england food porn.

so, here’s the deal.

come sunday, we shall embark on a journey deep into the heart of american cuisine. a trip to new england.

for one week, the girlfriend and i will be taking time off from our almost unbearably busy schedules to relax by the pool, catch up on some sleep, and (of course) eat some delicious food.

while in boston:

we will absolutely be going to quincy market…getting some lobster bisque. going to the sam adams brewery for a tour. eating a 14 course meal at an undisclosed restaurant. and maybe even going to the original legal seafood.

the rest of the week is all cape cod. i definitely want to eat as much seafood as humanly possible.

this post is basically to inform you of two things:

1. blogging daily, mostlikely.

2. some of those blogs will come in the form of video.

much of the writings and video-ings will probably be a brief overview of what we did that day. after we get back, i will find time to do proper, full-on reviews of the restaurants we go to.

all that being said, i do have some surprises in store for everyone. so make sure to stay updated everyday! you never know what wild and crazy things could happen on this adventure.

in an ode to our trip to massachusetts, tonight i made cheeseburgers with boston lettuce on them…and cape cod brand potato chips on the side!

to do list

college really gets in the way sometimes. even now, i’m actually writing in class because i don’t really care about the history of typefaces. about a month ago, i found a recipe for blood orange and olive oil cupcakes…which i made, and took pictures of. and they were delicious. but i never ended up having the time to post about them. SO! i will do that sometime this week. scouts honor.

in other news:

me and the girlfriend will be going to cape cod and boston for a week at the end of march. we’re staying in cape cod for the week, but staying in boston overnight one of those days. there are a few pretty awesome things that we will be doing, some of which i hope to write about. there is going to be some serious culinary adventure going on in massachusetts.

here’s a few things we plan on doing, that will definitely get written about:

  • tour of the cape cod potato chip factory (not sure if we’ll have time, but hopefully)
  • chef’s tasting menu at a restaurant in boston (i’m actually probably going to write about how difficult it is to pick one. i’ve narrowed it down to like 3)
  • Quincy Market (now THAT’s gonna be an adventure)
  • tour of the boston brewing co. (the sam adams factory)
  • lobstah!
  • other seafood
  • potentially hotel accomodations (even though that doesn’t have that much to do with food)
  • other stuff. trust me, it’s gonna be good.

additionally, she took my out for my birthday last weekend (a few weeks late because she had the flu) and i HAVE to write about that because it was one of the most awesome experiences of my life. the vacation we’re about to go on will be hands down better. but still, i can cross something off of my list i’ve always wanted to do.

stay tuned and tell a friend!
